Building Regional Expertise, Sharing Knowledge and Strengthening Technical Capacity

The ARASIA Regional Resource Centres (RRCs) are specialized institutions designated to support regional cooperation in nuclear science and technology. The Centres provide access to technical expertise, specialized facilities, knowledge, training and professional networks, helping ARASIA Member States strengthen national capacities and promote the safe, secure and peaceful applications of nuclear technology.

The RRC network currently brings together specialized institutions in Nuclear Medicine, Secondary Standard Dosimetry and Environmental Radiation Monitoring. Through technical cooperation, expert exchange, training courses, workshops, technical visits and knowledge sharing, the Centres contribute to the development of sustainable regional capabilities.

Regional Resource Centre on Nuclear Medicine
A specialized governmental cancer-care institution under the Kuwait Ministry of Health with substantial expertise in nuclear medicine, PET/CT and molecular imaging. The Nuclear Medicine Department has extensive experience in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic applications, operating PET/CT services and an in-house cyclotron facility. Published work demonstrates experience in PET/CT imaging, radiation dose optimization and targeted radionuclide therapy, including ¹⁷⁷Lu-based theranostic applications.

American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC)

Regional Resource Centre on Nuclear Medicine
Hosts a specialized Division of Nuclear Medicine and Cyclotron Facility within its Department of Diagnostic Radiology. The Centre combines clinical nuclear medicine, medical education, research and advanced molecular imaging. AUBMC inaugurated its cyclotron facility in 2016 and has maintained a long-standing collaboration with the IAEA. In 2022, AUBMC and the IAEA extended their cooperation to further promote clinical nuclear medicine practice in Lebanon and the wider region.

A national reference facility for radiation metrology and dosimetry, recognized internationally as Syria's designated institute for ionizing radiation dosimetry, radioactivity and neutron measurements under the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement framework. Part of the IAEA/WHO SSDL framework, designated as an ARASIA Regional Resource Centre following an MoU between the ARASIA Board of Representatives and the laboratory.

Regional Resource Centre on SSDL
The UAE's national secondary standards laboratory for ionizing radiation measurements, providing calibration services for radiation-measuring instruments used in healthcare, industry and nuclear applications. Recognized by the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology as a Designated Institute for radiation measurements, operating under ISO/IEC 17025:2017. Member of the IAEA/WHO SSDL Network since 2018. In 2025, accepted as a member of the CIPM's Consultative Committee for Ionizing Radiation (CCRI).

Regional Resource Centre on SSDL
Kuwait's national SSDL provides an important national and regional capability for radiation measurement and calibration. Established through a technical cooperation project, the laboratory developed national calibration capabilities for radiation protection instruments. Following successful international dose-quality auditing, nominated as a member of the IAEA/WHO SSDL Network. Its role is particularly relevant to the calibration of radiation protection instrumentation and strengthening measurement quality and traceability.

Regional Resource Centre on SSDL
Provides calibration and radiation measurement services for institutions working with ionizing radiation. The laboratory calibrates radiation survey and dosimetry instruments and ionization chambers used in diagnostic radiology, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. It also supports irradiation and quality control of personal radiation exposure devices. JAEC reports cooperation with the IAEA and international measurement laboratories to improve measurement systems.

Regional Resource Centre on SSDL
A national and regional reference facility for radiation dosimetry, providing traceability of radiation measurements to international primary standards through the IAEA network. IAEA conference documentation describes the KFSH&RC SSDL as having calibration capabilities covering radiation protection, diagnostic radiology and radiotherapy. The Biomedical Physics Department also provides radiation physics consultation, personal dosimetry, quality control, calibration and training.

Regional Resource Centre on Environmental Radiation Monitoring
Provides specialized scientific and analytical capabilities relevant to environmental radiation monitoring and radiological assessment. JAEC's research infrastructure includes laboratories working with geological and environmental materials. The Research Laboratories and Information Directorate and Chemical and Physical Analyses Laboratories have an accredited testing scope that includes environmental materials and radiochemistry and alpha/beta spectroscopy. As an ARASIA Regional Resource Centre, RID contributes to regional cooperation in environmental radioactivity assessment and analytical methods.

Regional Resource Centre on Environmental Radiation Monitoring
A national research institution with extensive expertise in environmental science, applied research and analytical services. In 2025, KISR's radiation measurements laboratory was recognized as an ARASIA Regional Resource Centre for Environmental Radiation Monitoring. The designation recognized the laboratory's technical competencies, quality systems and experience in cooperation with countries in the region through IAEA environmental radiological monitoring projects. KISR has significant experience in the measurement and assessment of environmental radioactivity, including analysis of radionuclides in food and water and assessment of radiation exposure through the food chain.

National Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical and Biological Regulatory Commission (I-NRC)

Regional Resource Centre on Environmental Radiation Monitoring — 2026
Iraq's national regulatory authority responsible for oversight of nuclear, radiological, chemical and biological safety and security. Established under Law No. 1 of 2024, consolidating the former national regulatory bodies. I-NRC has developed national capabilities for environmental radiation monitoring and early warning, including gamma dose-rate monitoring stations and associated data and communication infrastructure. The Commission also operates radiological inspection and monitoring capabilities across Iraq, with radiation inspection systems deployed at national border crossings. In 2026, the Commission continued to strengthen its emergency monitoring and response capabilities through cooperation with the IAEA and international early-warning systems.
